The Department of Chemistry at Biswanath College was established on 7th July, 1970. Initially, the department offered only the Higher Secondary Science Course, which was previously referred to as the Pre-University Course. Later, the B.Sc. General Chemistry Course was introduced on 20th July, 1976, and in 1980, the Major Course of Chemistry under Gauhati University was launched within the department.
The department was founded by Mr. Khiradhar Baruah, a former Head of the Department and a National Awardeeas a science communicator. His legacy has been further reinforced by the dedicated efforts of his successors.

The Department of Chemistry offers Undergraduate (UG) programs at both the Higher Secondary and Degree levels. To ensure the highest quality of education, the department comprises a team of competent and motivated teachers, well-equipped laboratories, and a departmental library.
