The Department of English at Biswanath College was established in 1960, the same year as the college itself. Initially, the department focused on providing instruction to BA General Course students. With the introduction of the Intermediate Course, English was also taught to these students alongside the BA students.
In 1970, with the introduction of the Science Stream, the department expanded its offerings to include English instruction for intermediate Science students. Over the years, as more courses such as BSc, BCom, and BCA were introduced, the department continued to play a pivotal role in teaching English to students across these disciplines.
Since the academic year 1985-86, the department has also been offering the BA Honours Course in English. The Government of Assam sanctioned three teaching positions in the Arts stream and one in the Science stream to support the department’s growing responsibilities.
Currently, the department is staffed by four permanent teachers. Additionally, two temporary teachers are appointed each semester to manage the increasing workload. The department proudly boasts of numerous alumni who have excelled in government jobs and other prestigious positions.
